SHIFTING PERSPECTIVE: Global Warming and Climate Change
2023 - present

These photographs represent a new kind of visual dialog related to global warming. The abstract components of these images metaphorically represent the beauty, symmetry and natural balance found in nature. When layered with my documentary images of causes and effects connected to climate change, the new photographs represent a different approach to draw attention to these complex and sometimes invisible interrelated issues.

In 1859 Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species, a masterpiece on evolution. Considering the age of the earth is around 4.5 billion years old, it is astounding that since the second Industrial Revolution began roughly 200 years ago, that the actions of humans have altered the natural course of evolution. I found a copy of one of Darwin’s handwritten notes in a book, Life and Letters of Charles Darwin II. The letter included the words “causes and change.” I incorporated his words in one image to pay homage to his devotion to our understanding of life and evolution.

Science has determined the burning of fossil fuels, primarily by humans, is the predominant reason for global warming. Unfortunately in the United States lines are politically drawn in regard to enacting solutions to this dire problem. I have intentionally incorporated hard lines in this work to allude to the difficulty, both the political and the physical challenges the entire world faces when addressing solutions to this man-made crisis.

I fear for the future of our beautiful planet. The environmental and related ecological consequences are and will continue to be devastating. Earth will survive, but diversity of species is already declining and human suffering has increased exponentially as a result of our continued unwillingness to take immediate and significant action to slow global warming. I hope these photographs will stimulate thought and lead more individuals to be advocates for change.
